Sama is a Sufi ceremony performed as dhikr. Sama means “listening”, while means “remembrance”. These rituals often include singing, playing instruments, dancing, recitation of poetry and prayers, wearing symbolic attire, and other rituals. It is a particularly popular form of worship in the Sufism.
SAMA DANCE
Sama dance, also known as “Whirling Dervish” dance, is a form of spiritual dance that is performed by the Sufis, a branch of Islam that emphasizes the pursuit of a direct, personal experience of God. The Sama dance is a form of meditation in which the dancer, known as a “dervish,” enters into a trance-like state through spinning.
The Sama dance is a symbolic reenactment of the planets orbiting around the sun, and the dervish representing the individual soul on its journey towards God. The spinning of the dervish represents the rotation of the planets and the dervish’s arms, which are open during the dance, symbolize the individual’s readiness to receive God’s blessings.
The dance is usually performed in a circular formation, known as a “sema,” and is accompanied by music, specifically the ney and the kudüm, which are traditional instruments. The Sama dance is not only a form of worship but also an art form that is performed in many parts of the world, including Turkey, Egypt, and Iran.
It’s worth noting that, Sama dance is considered a religious practice and it is usually performed in private ceremonies, not in public. It is also important to note that, depending on the culture and the country, the Sama dance may have slight variations in the rituals and customs associated with it.
